A stainless steel chemical tank is a material-selection problem before it is a fabrication problem. Stainless resists a lot, but it has sharp limits – warm chlorides and certain acids will defeat it, and a tank specified on grade alone can fail. This article covers how to choose the grade and where stainless is and is not the right call.
Kluczowy punkt
Stainless steel chemical tanks use 304 for mild, neutral-duty service and 316L (low-carbon) for chloride- or acid-bearing streams, with a corrosion allowance, mandatory passivation and proper venting. Stainless beats GFS where the chemical would attack the glass or where hygiene demands weldable, cleanable steel – but for strong acids, fluorides or hot concentrated streams, GFS or a dual-laminate is often the safer barrier.
304 vs 316L, pod względem chemii
Type 304 handles neutral-to-mild chemicals and many organics. Type 316L adds molybdenum for resistance to chlorides and a range of acids, and its low carbon avoids weld-zone sensitization – the usual starting point for real chemical service. The choice follows the corrosive species and concentration, not a default grade.
304: łagodne, neutralne środki chemiczne.
316L: chlorki, wiele kwasów, bezpieczny przy spawaniu.
Klasa odpowiada rodzajowi i stężeniu substancji.
Zapas, pasywacja, wentylacja
Even the right grade loses thickness over time, so a corrosion allowance is built into the wall for the expected service life. Passivation after fabrication restores the passive film that makes stainless stainless – skipping it is the most common cause of unexpected staining. Venting matters because some chemicals generate vapor or need to breathe without drawing a vacuum that can collapse the shell.

Pasiwacja obowiązkowa po spawaniu.
Wentylacja dla par/wdychania oraz podciśnienia.
Where Stainless Wins – and Where It Yields
Stainless is the right tank when the chemical is compatible and you need weldable, cleanable, sometimes hygienic steel – food/pharma-grade chemicals, mild acids, clean organics. It yields to GFS when the chemical would attack glass (strong acids, fluorides) – wait, glass resists most acids but is attacked by hydrofluoric acid and hot concentrated alkalis – and to a dual-laminate (PP/FRP over steel) when both strength and broad chemical resistance are needed. The point is to match the barrier to the chemistry rather than assume one material fits all.

Przykład projektu
A delivered corrosive-service tank shows graded selection: the Chile Brine Storage Project (2022) used SS316L roof and floor on a 12.99 m x 4.8 m tank for corrosive brine, and Russia (2024) added SS anaerobic reactor tanks – stainless chosen for the specific chemistry, not by default.

Ekspertyza firmy
Center Enamel fabricates stainless (304/316L) chemical and process tanks with material selection matched to the corrosivity, corrosion allowance, passivation QA and venting designed in – and can propose GFS or dual-laminate where stainless is the wrong barrier.
Często zadawane pytania
Kiedy stal 316L jest lepsza od 304 w przypadku zbiornika chemicznego?
For chloride- or acid-bearing streams and any welded service, because 316L’s molybdenum and low carbon resist pitting and weld sensitization.
Warm, chloride-bearing service (pitting, stress-corrosion cracking) and certain strong chemicals – grade choice and limits matter.
Dopasuj barierę do rodzaju substancji chemicznej.
Kiedy używać dwuwarstwowego laminatu?
When you need steel strength and broad chemical resistance together – PP/FRP over a steel shell.
Czym jest zapas na korozję?
Dodatkowa grubość ścianki zaprojektowana tak, aby absorbować przewidywane cieniowanie w trakcie okresu eksploatacji, dzięki czemu zbiornik pozostaje bezpieczny.
Wniosek
A stainless chemical tank is graded, allowed-for and passivated – 304 for mild duty, 316L for chloride and acid, with venting designed in. Stainless wins on compatibility and cleanability, but for strong acids, fluorides or hot concentrated streams, GFS or a dual-laminate is the more honest barrier. Match the material to the chemistry.
